Description

Defenders learn to protect space rather than follow individual attackers, maintaining their shape as the ball moves. The defending team shifts as a unit — sliding left, right, compressing, or expanding based on the ball's location. This drill builds the collective discipline and spatial awareness required for organized zonal defending at corners, free kicks, and in open play.

Setup

Use one half of the pitch. Set up a back four plus two midfielders (6 defenders in bibs). An attacking team of 5-6 players moves the ball around the edge of the box. Defenders shift zonally as a unit. Attackers try to find gaps. Play 3-minute rounds, then switch roles. Coach freezes play to correct positioning.

Coaching Points

  • +Stay connected as a unit — the distance between each defender should remain constant as you shift
  • +Keep your eyes on the ball first, then scan for runners entering your zone
  • +When the ball is on one side, compress toward that side — do not guard empty space on the far side
  • +Communicate constantly — call out runners, switches, and ball movement to teammates

Progressions

  1. 1.Allow attackers to make runs into the box — defenders must decide whether to follow or hold position
  2. 2.Add crosses from wide areas — defenders must clear while maintaining zonal shape
  3. 3.Play live with a goal — attackers try to score, defenders earn points for turnovers played out of the back
