Description
The defender starts behind or beside the attacker and must sprint to recover goal-side before the attacker can shoot. This drill develops the recovery pace, angles of approach, and 1v1 defending technique that defenders need when beaten or caught out of position. It simulates the critical moments in a match where a fast recovery run is the difference between conceding and making a crucial tackle.
Setup
Use one half of the pitch with a full-size goal and goalkeeper. Place a cone at the edge of the center circle for the attacker and another cone 5 yards behind for the defender. Coach plays a through ball. Attacker sprints onto it, defender must recover and prevent the shot. Alternate sides and rotate players.
Coaching Points
- +Sprint at full speed on a curved recovery angle to get goal-side — do not run straight at the attacker
- +Once goal-side, slow down and adopt a low defensive stance to jockey and delay
- +Force the attacker wide toward the touchline and away from the center of the goal
- +Time your tackle carefully — a mistimed challenge when recovering often results in a penalty or free kick
Progressions
- 1.Increase the defender's starting distance to 8 yards behind to make recovery harder
- 2.Add a second attacker — defender must decide whether to press the ball or cover the pass
- 3.Defender starts facing the wrong way and must turn and react on the coach's whistle
