Description

One team attacks with the ball and on the coach's whistle, the ball is turned over to the opposition, forcing the attacking team to immediately recover defensive shape. This drill trains the mental and physical switch from attack to defense, building habits of pressing and recovering positions quickly. It mirrors real-game scenarios where possession is lost and immediate defensive organization is critical.

Setup

Full pitch with two full-size goals and GKs. Two teams of 6-8 players. One team starts with possession attacking one goal. Coach has spare balls on the sideline to restart quickly.

Coaching Points

  • +On the turnover signal, nearest players must press the ball immediately to delay the counter
  • +Players furthest forward must sprint back to recover their defensive positions
  • +Communication is key — the deepest player organizes the defensive line
  • +Compact the space between the lines to deny penetrating passes

Progressions

  1. 1.Reduce the time allowed to recover shape from 5 seconds to 3 seconds before the new attacking team can score
  2. 2.Add a rule that the team in transition must get all players into their own half within 4 seconds
  3. 3.Award bonus points for winning the ball back within 5 seconds of losing it
