Description

Three attackers break from halfway against two recovering defenders in a fast-paced counter-attacking scenario. This drill develops the ability to exploit numerical advantages in transition, emphasizing quick decision-making on when to pass, dribble, or shoot. Players learn to spread wide, attack at pace, and finish under pressure before cover defenders arrive.

Setup

Use half a pitch with a full-size goal. Place 3 attackers on the halfway line and 2 defenders 10 yards ahead of them. GK starts in goal. Coach plays the ball to the central attacker to trigger the break.

Coaching Points

  • +Attackers must spread wide immediately to stretch the two defenders and create passing lanes
  • +Ball carrier should drive at pace toward the space between defenders to commit them
  • +Supporting runners time their runs to stay onside while offering width and depth
  • +Final ball must be decisive — shoot or pass early before defenders recover

Progressions

  1. 1.Add a third recovering defender who starts 5 yards behind the attackers to increase urgency
  2. 2.Require a one-touch finish to speed up the final action
  3. 3.Play 3v2+GK then transition immediately into defending as 3 new attackers enter from halfway
