Description

Players practice long diagonal passes to switch play rapidly from one side of the pitch to the other. The drill begins with build-up on one flank, drawing defenders across, before a decisive switch pass exploits the space on the far side. Teams score bonus points for goals directly following a switch of play.

Setup

Full pitch with two goals and GKs. Divide the pitch into three vertical channels with cones. Teams play 5v5 or up to 8v8. The ball must travel through at least two channels before a shot is taken. Bonus point awarded for a goal scored within 5 seconds of a switch.

Coaching Points

  • +The switch pass must be hit firmly along the ground or as a driven lofted ball — no loopy crosses
  • +Far-side winger must hold width and stay patient until the switch comes
  • +Body position open: the passer should already be facing the target before receiving
  • +After switching, attack quickly before the defence can shift across

Progressions

  1. 1.Require the switch pass to be one-touch — players must be pre-set before receiving
  2. 2.Add neutral wide players who can only play in the wide channels to guarantee width
  3. 3.Limit touches to 2 in the wide channels to speed up the attack after the switch
