Description

A 9v9 game on a full pitch where the ball must pass through each third of the field before a goal can be scored, preventing long balls over the top and encouraging structured build-up play. Defending teams earn possession turnovers if they win the ball and can play forward directly. This drill replicates match-day positional structure and rewards intelligent passing combinations.

Setup

Full pitch divided into defensive, middle, and attacking thirds with cones along each touchline. Two full-size goals with GKs. Teams of 7-9 outfield players. Ball must be played from the defensive third through the middle third before entering the attacking third.

Coaching Points

  • +Defenders must be brave on the ball — playing out from the back is non-negotiable
  • +Midfielders drop into pockets of space between the lines to offer forward passing options
  • +Forward players make runs to stretch the defence vertically, creating space in midfield
  • +When possession is lost, press immediately in the third where the ball was turned over

Progressions

  1. 1.Require at least 2 passes in each third before progressing to the next
  2. 2.Award double points for goals scored with a first-time finish in the attacking third
  3. 3.Add a rule that at least one player must move between thirds with each progression
