Description

Four midfielders arranged in a diamond shape continuously rotate positions while maintaining passing tempo. As the ball circulates, players move to the next position in the diamond, developing an intuitive understanding of midfield spacing and rotation. Passive defenders are introduced to force quick decisions about when and where to rotate.

Setup

Mark a 20x20-yard diamond (rotated square) with cones at each point. Four attacking midfielders start at each cone. Two passive defenders stand inside the diamond. Additional players wait outside to rotate in every 90 seconds.

Coaching Points

  • +Move BEFORE the ball arrives — anticipate the pass and rotate early
  • +Maintain the diamond shape at all times; if one player rotates, all must adjust
  • +Communicate verbally — call for the ball or direct teammates to rotate
  • +Receive on the back foot to keep the body open and play forward quickly

Progressions

  1. 1.Make defenders active — they can intercept but cannot leave the diamond
  2. 2.Add a fifth attacker in the centre of the diamond who acts as a pivot
  3. 3.Require one-touch passing only, increasing the speed of rotation
