Description
A 5v5 game where teams can score either by shooting into a mini goal or by completing 8 consecutive passes, which counts as one goal. This dual scoring system incentivises patient possession play and rewards teams that can maintain composure under pressure. Defenders must decide whether to press aggressively to break the pass count or sit deep to block the goal.
Setup
Mark a 30x25-yard grid with a mini goal (2 yards wide) on each end line. Two teams of 5. Teams can score by shooting into the mini goal OR by completing 8 consecutive passes without the opposition touching the ball. An interception or the ball leaving the grid resets the pass count. Play 5-minute games.
Coaching Points
- +Count passes out loud as a team to build collective awareness of the possession target
- +Maintain the shape and spacing even when close to 8 passes — do not cluster around the ball
- +Vary the tempo: slow circulation to draw defenders out, then quick combination to reach 8
- +Defenders must communicate when to press and when to hold — inconsistency creates gaps
Progressions
- 1.Reduce the pass target to 6 for younger players or increase to 10 for advanced groups
- 2.Add a rule that the 8th pass must be played to a different player than passes 6 and 7
- 3.Possession goals count as 2 points while regular goals count as 1 to further incentivise keeping the ball
