Description

Partners stand 5-8 yards apart and practice heading the ball back and forth, with the server tossing underhand to the header. The focus is on making contact with the forehead, keeping eyes open through the moment of contact, and using the neck muscles to generate power and direction. This foundational drill builds confidence and correct technique before progressing to more dynamic aerial situations.

Setup

Players pair up and stand 5-8 yards apart. One ball per pair. Server holds the ball and tosses underhand to partner who heads it back. Switch roles every 10 headers.

Coaching Points

  • +Strike the ball with the flat of the forehead, not the top of the head
  • +Keep eyes open and mouth closed at the moment of contact
  • +Generate power from the neck and upper body by arching back then snapping forward
  • +Attack the ball rather than letting it hit you — move toward it aggressively

Progressions

  1. 1.Increase distance to 10 yards and require more power on headers
  2. 2.Add directional heading — server calls left or right and header must angle the ball accordingly
  3. 3.Make it competitive — pairs count consecutive successful headers without the ball hitting the ground
