Description
A 3v3 game with dedicated goalkeepers on a compact pitch with proper goals, creating a realistic match environment in a small-sided format. Every player is constantly involved in attack and defence, developing game intelligence, shooting confidence, and an understanding of when to press versus when to cover. The GKs gain valuable shot-stopping reps in a high-frequency shooting environment.
Setup
Mark a 25x20-yard pitch with a proper goal (or cones 5 yards wide) at each end. One GK per team. Three outfield players per team. Play 4-minute games, losers rotate off and new team comes on. GKs can distribute with hands or feet.
Coaching Points
- +Spread out in attack to create passing angles and shooting lanes
- +Compact in defence — stay goal-side and force attackers wide
- +GKs should be vocal and command their area — start organizing the defence early
- +Shoot early and often — in 3v3 there is rarely time for the perfect chance
Progressions
- 1.GK must distribute with feet only — no throws or drop-kicks
- 2.Add a halfway line: teams cannot retreat past their own half when in possession
- 3.Award 2 points for goals scored from first-time shots to encourage quick finishing
