Description
A 3v3 game with three neutral players who always join the team in possession, creating a constant 6v3 overload for the attacking side. When the defending team wins the ball, they immediately become the attackers with neutral support, forcing rapid transitions. This game teaches players to exploit numerical advantages, play with tempo in possession, and press urgently when the ball is lost.
Setup
Mark a 30x25-yard grid. Two teams of 3 wear coloured bibs. Three neutral players wear a third colour. Team in possession plays 6v3 with the neutrals. When possession changes, the new team in possession gains the neutrals. Play to 5 goals (passing through a gate or to a target player) then rotate neutrals.
Coaching Points
- +Neutral players must move to support positions immediately when possession changes
- +In the 6v3, move the ball quickly with one or two touches to exploit the overload
- +Defenders must press as a unit of three — do not dive in individually
- +Transition moments are the key learning point: react within 2 seconds of the turnover
Progressions
- 1.Reduce neutral player touches to 1 to increase the tempo of play
- 2.Neutrals can only play on the outside of the grid, forcing the team to use width
- 3.Add end zones — the attacking team must play into the end zone to score, not just through gates
