high intensity
8–12 min4–20 playersU8–U18Description
Players race with the ball over 30 yards, focusing on pushing the ball ahead and sprinting to it rather than taking many small touches. Develops the ability to dribble at speed in open space — essential for breakaways and counter-attacks.
Setup
Mark a 30-yard straight with cones at start and finish. Players line up in pairs for races. Each player has a ball. On the whistle, both race to the far cone. Ball must be under control when crossing the line. Set up multiple lanes for larger groups.
Coaching Points
- +Push the ball 2-3 yards ahead with the laces and sprint to it
- +Use the outside of the foot for the most natural running stride
- +Do not look at the ball while running — glance down only when touching it
- +Pump your arms like a sprinter between touches
Progressions
- 1.Add a turn at the far end and race back (60 yards total)
- 2.Place gates (two cones 2 yards apart) at 10-yard intervals — must dribble through each gate
- 3.Finish with a shot on goal at the end of the sprint
- 4.Relay format — 3 players per team, dribble 30 yards and pass to next teammate
