In pairs, one player shields the ball while the other tries to win it in a 3x3 yard square. The shielder uses their body to keep between the ball and the defender. Develops strength on the ball, body positioning, and the ability to play with your back to pressure.
Setup
Mark 3x3 yard squares with cones (one per pair). One player has the ball and shields it. The other tries to win it legally. 30-second rounds, then swap roles. The shielder earns 1 point for every second they keep the ball.
Coaching Points
- +Keep your body sideways-on between the ball and the defender
- +Bend your knees and lower your center of gravity for balance
- +Use the arm (not elbow) to feel where the defender is
- +Keep the ball on the foot furthest from the defender
- +Use the sole of the foot to move the ball while shielding
Progressions
- 1.Expand to a 5x5 yard grid — shielder can dribble and shield
- 2.Two defenders try to win the ball from one shielder
- 3.Shielder must complete 3 turns while maintaining possession
- 4.Play into a game: shielder receives from coach, shields for 3 seconds, then turns and passes to a target
