Description
The classic youth soccer dribbling game where all players (minnows) attempt to dribble across the grid while 1-2 players without balls (sharks) try to kick the minnows' balls out of the area. When a minnow loses their ball, they become a shark. This game develops close dribbling, shielding, and spatial awareness in a fun, competitive format that young players love and want to play repeatedly.
Setup
25x20 yard grid marked with cones. All players start on one side with a ball except 1-2 sharks who stand in the middle. On "Go!", minnows try to dribble to the other side. Sharks kick balls out of the grid.
Coaching Points
- +Keep the ball close to your feet — use small, quick touches to stay in control
- +Keep your head up to see where the sharks are and find open space to dribble into
- +Shield the ball with your body by putting yourself between the ball and the shark
- +Change direction quickly when a shark approaches — use the sole, inside, or outside of your foot
Progressions
- 1.Start with 2 sharks instead of 1 to increase the challenge from the beginning
- 2.Minnows who lose their ball must do 5 toe taps before becoming a shark
- 3.Play "Treasure Island" variant — minnows must dribble to a small island (center circle) and back
