Description
The goalkeeper practices organizing and directing the defensive line during live play scenarios, developing the vocal leadership and commanding presence required to control the penalty area. The GK must communicate positioning, mark assignments, and danger calls while the defense faces crosses, through balls, and set pieces. This drill builds the habit of constant, clear communication that prevents defensive breakdowns.
Setup
Third of the pitch with full-size goal. GK in goal with a back four defending. Attacking team of 5-6 players play from the middle third. Crosses, through balls, and set pieces are delivered in sequence. Coach pauses play to assess GK communication.
Coaching Points
- +Use specific commands — "left shoulder", "man on", "keeper's ball" — not just "hey" or "watch out"
- +Communicate before the ball arrives, not after — anticipate danger and direct early
- +Use a loud, commanding tone that cuts through crowd and game noise — practice projecting your voice
- +Point and gesture as well as shout — visual cues reinforce verbal commands for defenders
Progressions
- 1.Add crowd noise using a speaker to force the GK to project their voice louder
- 2.Remove one defender to create overload situations requiring even sharper GK communication
- 3.Play blind — GK must communicate even when they cannot see the attacker behind a defender
