Description
Two teams of six play on one half of the pitch, with the defending team practicing staying compact and denying central penetration. The defending team works as a unit to force play wide where it is less dangerous, then presses aggressively if the ball enters the central channel. This drill teaches the collective defensive shape and discipline required to frustrate possession-based opponents.
Setup
Use one half of the pitch with a full-size goal. Two teams of 6 in different colored bibs. The attacking team starts with the ball at the halfway line. The defending team sets up in two lines of 3 (compact 3-3 shape). Play 4-minute rounds, then switch roles. Defending team earns a point for winning the ball and clearing past halfway.
Coaching Points
- +Keep the distance between your defensive line and midfield line to no more than 15 yards at all times
- +Force play wide by showing the attacker toward the touchline with your body position
- +When the ball goes wide, the far-side players tuck in centrally to protect the goal
- +Press as a unit when the ball enters the central channel — do not let them turn and face your goal
Progressions
- 1.Attacking team gets a point for every completed pass in the central channel to reward the defense for blocking it
- 2.Add a transition rule — when defenders win the ball, they must score on a mini-goal within 5 seconds
- 3.Expand to 8v8 with full defensive and midfield lines to increase realism
