Description
Groups of 2-3 players work quick passing combinations — wall passes, overlaps, and third-man runs — before finishing on goal. The emphasis is on speed of thought and execution: the ball should move faster than defenders can recover. This drill bridges the gap between technical passing drills and match-realistic finishing by requiring players to combine under time pressure and finish with composure.
Setup
Set up in the attacking third with a full-size goal and goalkeeper. Place a starting cone 30 yards from goal. Groups of 3 players begin at the cone and must complete a 2-3 pass combination before shooting. A mannequin or cone at the top of the box simulates a defender to play around.
Coaching Points
- +Play the pass and move immediately — never stand and admire your own pass
- +Weight of pass is critical: firm enough to arrive quickly, soft enough to control
- +The final pass before the shot should be into the shooter's stride, not behind them
- +Communicate early — call for the ball, direct the combination with your voice
Progressions
- 1.Add a live recovering defender who starts 5 yards behind the attackers
- 2.Require a specific combination pattern (e.g., wall pass then overlap) before the shot
- 3.Limit touches to two per player to force faster play
