Teams practice coordinated pressing to win the ball high up the field. When the ball goes to a designated "trigger" area, the whole team compresses and presses together. Develops collective defensive movement, communication, and the ability to win the ball back quickly.
Setup
Mark a 40x30 yard area split into thirds. Team A (4 players) defends. Team B (6 players, including a GK) builds from the back. Team B tries to play through Team A's press. If Team A wins the ball, they counter-attack to a mini goal. Play 3-minute rounds.
Coaching Points
- +Trigger: the press starts when the ball is played to the wide player or a poor touch occurs
- +Nearest player presses the ball carrier — force them toward the sideline
- +Second player cuts the backward passing lane
- +Everyone else shifts toward the ball — compact, 15-20 yards between the front and back
- +If the press is broken, recover shape immediately — do not chase individually
Progressions
- 1.Reduce to a 35x30 area for even more compactness
- 2.Team A gets bonus points for winning the ball in the first third
- 3.Team B is limited to 2 touches to simulate playing under pressure
- 4.Add a specific trigger command that the captain calls (e.g., "GO!")
