Description

A team of 4 defenders practices sliding across as a unit to follow the ball's movement. The ball is passed between 5-6 attackers positioned across the width of the field. Defenders do NOT press — they only shift and maintain their shape. Develops the discipline to stay connected as a back line.

Setup

Mark a 40-yard wide area. 4 defenders stand in a line across the midfield. 5-6 attackers spread across the opposite side and pass the ball side to side. Defenders shift as a unit with each pass. No tackling — pure shape work. Run for 2-minute periods.

Coaching Points

  • +Move as a unit — when the ball goes left, everyone goes left
  • +Keep 5-7 yards between each defender — close enough to cover, wide enough to not bunch
  • +The defender nearest the ball should be slightly ahead (pressing position)
  • +Communicate constantly — "shift left", "tuck in", "hold the line"
  • +Do NOT chase the ball — trust the shape to cover passing lanes

Progressions

  1. 1.Attackers can play forward passes — defenders must drop and recover
  2. 2.Allow one attacker to dribble at the defense — nearest defender presses, rest cover
  3. 3.Make it game-realistic: attackers try to play through the defense into a goal
  4. 4.Add a midfield line of 3 who also shift — practice two-line defensive structure
