Description
A rondo played across three horizontal zones where the ball must progress through each zone sequentially before a point is scored. The possession team positions players in each zone while the defending team tries to intercept during transitions between zones. This drill develops patience in build-up, the ability to find forward passes under pressure, and collective movement to create passing lanes.
Setup
Mark out a 30x20-yard area divided into 3 equal horizontal zones (each 10x20 yards). Place 3-4 possession players in each zone with 2 defenders roaming. Ball starts in Zone 1 and must reach Zone 3 through Zone 2.
Coaching Points
- +Players in the middle zone must constantly adjust position to offer passing angles
- +Play back to keep possession rather than forcing a risky forward pass
- +Body shape open to the field — receive on the half-turn to play forward quickly
- +Defenders press as a unit to cut off passing lanes between zones
Progressions
- 1.Add a defender in each zone so pressers cannot roam freely
- 2.Require a minimum of 3 passes per zone before progressing
- 3.Ball must return to Zone 1 after reaching Zone 3 to score a second point
