Description

The goalkeeper initiates build-up play by distributing to two centre-backs, who must find passing lanes into midfield against a pressing unit. A 6v4 positional game on a half pitch teaches players to recognize when to play short, when to switch, and when to go direct under realistic pressure. Rotations ensure every outfield player experiences the build-up and pressing roles.

Setup

Use a half pitch with a full-size goal. GK starts with the ball. Two CBs position wide near the 18-yard box edges. Four midfielders occupy the central zone between halfway and the top of the box. Four pressers start in a compact block near the centre circle.

Coaching Points

  • +GK scans before receiving — decide short or long before the ball arrives
  • +CBs split wide to stretch the press and create passing angles
  • +Midfielders check in and out to offer passing windows between the lines
  • +If the press is overloaded centrally, switch play quickly to the weak side

Progressions

  1. 1.Allow pressers to increase to 5, forcing faster decisions from the build-up team
  2. 2.Add a target line at halfway — build-up team scores by dribbling across it under control
  3. 3.Impose a 3-touch limit on CBs and a 2-touch limit on midfielders
