Description
A rehearsed attacking pattern where the fullback makes a timed overlapping run around the winger to receive the ball in space and deliver a cross. The winger checks inside to draw the defender narrow, creating the channel for the overlap. The drill builds muscle memory for one of the most common wide attacking combinations in modern football.
Setup
Use a half pitch with a full-size goal and GK. Set up cones marking the wide channel (10 yards wide along the touchline). Fullback starts near halfway, winger starts wide near the channel, two forwards position in the box. A passive defender marks the winger initially.
Coaching Points
- +Fullback times the run to arrive at pace — do not start too early and get caught offside or static
- +Winger must sell the inside move to draw the defender before releasing the pass
- +Cross should be delivered first-time or with one touch to beat the recovering defence
- +Far-post and near-post runners in the box must time arrivals to meet the cross
Progressions
- 1.Make the wide defender fully active so the winger must decide: pass to overlapping fullback or cut inside
- 2.Add a second defender who tracks the fullback run, creating a 2v2 wide
- 3.Alternate between overlap and underlap runs, with the winger calling the pattern
