Description
An attacking exercise focused on creating 2v1 and 3v2 overloads on the flanks to generate crossing opportunities. The wide players combine with overlapping fullbacks and supporting midfielders to outnumber the defence on one side. After delivering the cross, forwards attack specific zones in the penalty area for the finish.
Setup
Half pitch with a full-size goal and GK. Mark wide channels (10 yards) on each side. Start with 2 attackers plus a fullback on one wing against 1 defender. A midfielder starts centrally and joins wide to create the overload. Two strikers position in the box.
Coaching Points
- +Create the overload quickly — the third player arriving wide must sprint to make it a numerical advantage
- +The crosser should look up early and pick out the best run in the box
- +Near-post, far-post, and penalty-spot runners must time arrivals to avoid being static targets
- +If the cross is blocked, recycle possession and switch to the opposite flank
Progressions
- 1.Add a second defender wide so the overload requires better combination play
- 2.Alternate starting flank each rep — coach calls which side to attack
- 3.After the cross, if the defence clears, they can counter-attack to a mini goal at halfway
