Description
Balls are placed in the center circle (the "treasure island") and teams compete to steal as many balls as possible by dribbling them back to their home base (corner zone). Players can also raid other teams' bases to steal their treasure. This game develops dribbling speed, spatial awareness, and strategic thinking in a pirate-themed format that young players find irresistible and highly motivating.
Setup
Use a full grid (30x30 yards) with a central circle containing 15-20 balls. Four teams of 3-4 players each have a home base in a corner (5x5 yard square marked with cones). On "Go!", players run to the center to dribble balls back to their base.
Coaching Points
- +Dribble quickly but keep the ball under control — a stolen ball that rolls away wastes your trip
- +Look before you go — scan for the easiest treasure to steal and the safest route back to base
- +Work as a team — have one player guard your base while others raid for treasure
- +Use the inside and outside of your foot to dribble at speed while changing direction
Progressions
- 1.Allow players to steal from other teams' bases — not just the center treasure island
- 2.Add a "guard" player at each base who can defend but cannot leave the base zone
- 3.Require players to perform a skill move at the center island before they can take a ball
