Description
Players dribble freely around a grid and respond to the coach's color commands: green means dribble fast, yellow means dribble slowly with close control, and red means stop the ball dead with the sole of the foot. This simple but effective game teaches young players ball control at different speeds, listening skills, and the ability to change pace — a fundamental dribbling skill that transfers directly to game situations.
Setup
20x20 yard grid marked with cones. Every player has a ball and dribbles freely inside the grid. Coach stands outside and calls colors. Last player to stop on red is eliminated or does a fun forfeit (3 jumping jacks).
Coaching Points
- +Green light — push the ball forward with bigger touches and accelerate into space
- +Yellow light — keep the ball within one step of your feet using small, controlled touches
- +Red light — stop the ball dead with the sole of your foot as quickly as possible
- +Keep your head up while dribbling so you can hear the command and avoid other players
Progressions
- 1.Add "reverse" — players must dribble backwards using the sole of their foot
- 2.Add "roundabout" — players must do a full turn (360 degrees) with the ball and continue dribbling
- 3.Use visual signals (colored cones held up) instead of verbal calls to develop scanning habits
