Description
Pairs of cones create "gates" scattered across the grid, and players dribble through as many gates as possible within a time limit. Players cannot go through the same gate twice in a row, encouraging them to scan the area, plan their route, and navigate through traffic. This drill develops close control, awareness of space, and the ability to dribble with purpose — looking up to find the next target rather than staring at the ball.
Setup
25x25 yard grid with 10-12 cone gates (two cones 2 yards apart) scattered randomly. Each player has a ball. Coach times 60-second rounds. Players count their gates and try to beat their score each round.
Coaching Points
- +Keep your head up to spot open gates — do not stare at the ball while dribbling
- +Use both feet to change direction quickly and navigate through gates from any angle
- +Plan your route 2-3 gates ahead so you are always moving efficiently through the grid
- +Use quick, small touches when near a gate and bigger touches in open space between gates
Progressions
- 1.Add "traffic" — 2 players without balls act as defenders and try to block gates
- 2.Require alternating feet — left foot through one gate, right foot through the next
- 3.Make some gates worth double points (mark with different colored cones) and placed in harder-to-reach spots
