Description
Players practice hitting teammates or target zones at distances of 30-40 yards using both driven and lofted passes. The drill develops the technique for switching play, hitting diagonal balls, and playing long passes into channels. Accuracy at distance is a critical skill for center-backs, holding midfielders, and goalkeepers who need to distribute effectively and change the point of attack.
Setup
Set up two target zones using cones, 35 yards apart. Players split into two groups, one at each zone. Player passes from one target zone to the other, aiming to land the ball inside the 5x5 yard target. Alternate between driven and lofted passes. Award 2 points for hitting the target, 1 point for within 5 yards. First group to 20 points wins.
Coaching Points
- +For driven passes, strike through the center of the ball with your laces and keep your body over it
- +For lofted passes, lean back slightly and strike under the ball with follow-through pointing to your target
- +Plant your standing foot next to the ball pointing at the target — incorrect plant foot ruins accuracy at distance
- +Practice with both feet — the ability to switch play with either foot makes you twice as dangerous
Progressions
- 1.Add a moving receiver who must control the ball on the move, not standing still
- 2.Require first-time passes — receive from the opposite group and immediately play it back long
- 3.Introduce a defender near the target zone who applies pressure on the receiver's first touch
