Description
Players must receive, protect, and pass the ball accurately while a defender closes them down at speed. The drill simulates the match reality of having limited time and space on the ball, forcing players to scan before receiving, take a clean first touch away from pressure, and execute an accurate pass under duress. It develops composure, body orientation, and quick decision-making in tight areas.
Setup
Set up a 15x15 yard grid. 3 outside players on different edges, 1 receiver in the middle, 1 defender in the middle. An outside player passes to the receiver, the defender closes down, and the receiver must pass to one of the other outside players. Rotate the middle players every 2 minutes.
Coaching Points
- +Scan over your shoulder before the ball arrives to know where the pressure is coming from
- +Take your first touch away from the closing defender to buy yourself an extra half-second
- +Open your body to see both the ball and your passing target — do not receive with your back to play
- +Disguise your pass with subtle body feints or eye movements to delay the defender's reaction
Progressions
- 1.Add a second defender so the receiver faces pressure from two directions
- 2.Limit the receiver to two touches — one to control, one to pass
- 3.Outside players can move along their edge to create better passing angles, adding a decision-making element
