Description
The team practices setting up in a low or mid defensive block and defending against waves of attacking pressure without losing shape. The defending team must absorb possession, deny space in behind, and transition quickly when the ball is won. This drill builds the mental resilience and tactical discipline needed to defend leads or frustrate dominant opponents by staying organized and patient.
Setup
Use one half of the pitch with a full-size goal. The defending team (7-9 players) sets up in a mid or low block with two defined lines. The attacking team (7-9 players) has possession and tries to score. Play 5-minute rounds. Defending team earns 3 points for a clean sheet and 1 point for winning possession and playing past the halfway line. Attacking team earns 3 for a goal.
Coaching Points
- +Maintain two compact lines with no more than 10-12 yards between midfield and defense in a low block
- +Do not chase the ball when it is played wide — shift as a unit and let them have the touchline
- +The front of the block must press the ball only when it enters your zone — do not break shape to press high
- +When you win the ball, look to transition quickly with a direct pass forward before the opponent can reorganize
Progressions
- 1.Coach calls out mid block or low block mid-round — defenders must adjust depth immediately
- 2.Reduce the defending team by one player to create overload pressure
- 3.Allow counter-attacks to a mini-goal at halfway — defenders must transition from block to attack instantly
