Description

Defenders practice heading the ball away from the danger zone with maximum distance, height, and width. A server delivers crosses or lofted balls into the box while defenders attack the ball at its highest point and aim clearances toward the flanks. This drill develops the defensive mindset of getting the ball as far from goal as possible while winning aerial duels under pressure.

Setup

Use one half of the pitch. A server delivers balls from the wing into the penalty area. 3-4 defenders line up at the edge of the 6-yard box. Defenders attack each delivery and head clear toward the opposite flank. Rotate servers and defenders every 5 deliveries.

Coaching Points

  • +Attack the ball at the highest point — do not wait for it to come down to you
  • +Head the ball high, wide, and far — aim clearances toward the touchline, never back across goal
  • +Use a strong jump off one foot when moving and two feet when stationary for maximum height
  • +Communicate loudly — call for the ball early so teammates know you are taking responsibility

Progressions

  1. 1.Add a passive attacker who competes for the header to create realistic pressure
  2. 2.Deliver balls from alternating sides so defenders must adjust body shape quickly
  3. 3.Make attackers fully active — defender must win the header against genuine opposition
