Description

The goalkeeper practices building play from the back under pressure, developing the passing range and decision-making needed in modern soccer. The GK receives back-passes and must distribute to teammates while opponents press. This drill builds confidence on the ball, improves the GK's ability to read pressing patterns, and develops the composure to find the right pass under duress.

Setup

Third of the pitch with full-size goal. GK starts in goal, 4 outfield teammates take positions in a build-up shape (2 CBs, 2 wide). 2-3 pressing attackers apply pressure. Coach rolls the ball to GK to start each rep.

Coaching Points

  • +Assess the pressing pattern before receiving the ball — know your options in advance
  • +Take a good first touch that opens up your body to the direction you want to play
  • +If pressed, play the simple pass to the nearest open player — do not take unnecessary risks
  • +When space is available, use a driven pass to switch play and bypass the press

Progressions

  1. 1.Add a third presser to force quicker decision-making from the GK
  2. 2.Require the GK to play out with a maximum of 2 touches before distributing
  3. 3.After successfully playing out, continue the attack with a small-sided game in the middle third
