Description

A fundamental drill focused on proper catching technique at various heights — ground balls, waist-height, and high balls. The server feeds balls in a structured sequence, allowing the GK to rehearse the W-grip for high catches, basket technique for low balls, and the smother technique for ground balls. This is an essential warm-up drill that reinforces clean handling habits and reduces the likelihood of spilling shots in games.

Setup

Penalty area with full-size goal. GK stands on the goal line. Server stands 10 yards away with a supply of 8-10 balls. Server feeds balls in a structured sequence: 3 ground, 3 waist, 3 high. GK returns each ball cleanly to the server.

Coaching Points

  • +Use the W-grip for balls at chest height and above — thumbs almost touching behind the ball
  • +For ground balls, get your body behind the ball and scoop with both hands into your chest
  • +Watch the ball all the way into your hands — do not snatch at it or look away early
  • +Cushion the ball on impact — soft hands absorb the pace rather than letting it bounce out

Progressions

  1. 1.Increase the pace of the feeds to challenge the GK's reflexes and handling under pressure
  2. 2.Randomize the height of feeds so the GK cannot predict what is coming
  3. 3.Add a second server at an angle so the GK must adjust body position between catches
