Description

A high-intensity drill focused on improving the goalkeeper's foot speed, lateral movement, and reaction saves. The GK faces rapid-fire shots from close range after completing agility footwork sequences through cones or ladders. This drill develops the explosive movements and sharp reflexes that separate good goalkeepers from great ones, while building the muscle memory for quick recovery between saves.

Setup

Penalty area with full-size goal. Set up an agility ladder or 4-5 cones in a zigzag pattern 8 yards from goal. 3 servers stand 12 yards out with a supply of balls. GK completes footwork pattern then faces immediate shots from the servers.

Coaching Points

  • +Stay on the balls of your feet throughout — never get flat-footed between shots
  • +Use small, quick shuffle steps to adjust position rather than crossing your feet
  • +Set your body before each shot — even a split second of being balanced improves reaction time
  • +Keep your hands in the ready position at chest height, slightly forward and active

Progressions

  1. 1.Increase the speed of the footwork pattern and reduce time between shots to 1 second
  2. 2.Add a second ball — GK makes a save, recovers, and faces another shot within 2 seconds
  3. 3.Include a diving save into the sequence — footwork, dive left, recover, shot from the right
