Description
The goalkeeper faces a series of 1v1 breakaway situations from various angles and distances, developing the ability to read the attacker's body shape, close down space effectively, and make themselves big at the right moment. This drill builds the decision-making skills GKs need to choose between standing up, spreading, or diving at the attacker's feet in the most dangerous game situations.
Setup
Third of the pitch with full-size goal. Attackers start from 30 yards out with the ball at their feet. GK starts on the edge of the 6-yard box. Coach triggers each rep by calling the attacker to go. Rotate attackers after each attempt.
Coaching Points
- +Close down quickly but slow your approach as you get within 3-4 yards of the attacker
- +Stay on your feet as long as possible — going to ground too early makes you easy to beat
- +Make yourself big by spreading your body wide and low, reducing the attacker's shooting angle
- +Read the attacker's touch — if they take a heavy touch, pounce on the ball immediately
Progressions
- 1.Start the attacker from wider angles to practice closing down from different positions
- 2.Add a trailing defender who provides pressure but arrives 2 seconds after the attacker
- 3.Allow the attacker to choose between shooting, rounding the GK, or playing a through ball to a runner
