Description

The goalkeeper practices catching and punching crosses delivered from wide areas with varying pace and trajectory. Servers deliver from both flanks while attackers make runs into the box to apply realistic pressure. This drill develops the GK's ability to read the flight of the ball, time their jump, and claim the ball at the highest point while communicating with defenders.

Setup

Penalty area with full-size goal. Two servers positioned wide on each flank near the byline. 2-3 attackers make runs from outside the box. GK starts on the goal line and adjusts position as the ball is served.

Coaching Points

  • +Set position early — get in line with the ball and take a slight step toward the delivery
  • +Call loudly and early — shout "keeper!" or "away!" so defenders know your intention
  • +Catch the ball at the highest point with two hands, leading with the knee for protection
  • +If you cannot catch cleanly, punch with both fists toward the far touchline for distance and safety

Progressions

  1. 1.Add a second GK-specific attacker who blocks the GK's path to simulate game congestion
  2. 2.Vary deliveries between inswingers, outswingers, driven crosses, and lofted balls
  3. 3.After collecting, GK must distribute quickly to a target player on the wing
