Description
Groups of three attackers break toward goal in rapid waves, first facing two defenders, then immediately followed by a second wave facing just one defender. This creates continuous high-intensity counter-attacking reps with minimal rest, simulating the pace of real-game transitions. Players develop composure in front of goal and the fitness to sustain attacking runs throughout a match.
Setup
Half pitch with full-size goal and GK. Three groups of 3 attackers line up at halfway. Two defenders start on the edge of the penalty area for wave 1, one defender for wave 2. Coach triggers each wave with a pass.
Coaching Points
- +First wave must finish their attack quickly — the next wave starts within seconds
- +Ball carrier should drive centrally and use wide runners as decoy or passing options
- +Make early decisions — do not slow down to think, commit to the action
- +After finishing, sprint back to the halfway line to join the defensive queue
Progressions
- 1.Add a recovering defender who chases from behind to increase urgency
- 2.Limit each wave to 8 seconds to force quicker finishing
- 3.Alternate between 3v2 and 2v1 waves to vary the overload scenarios
