Description

Attackers receive a 5-yard head start and break toward goal while defenders must sprint to recover and prevent the shot. This drill trains the intensity and angles of defensive recovery runs, building the habit of tracking back at full speed after losing possession. Defenders learn to take the correct recovery angle — curving toward their own goal rather than chasing the ball directly.

Setup

Half pitch with full-size goal and GK. Attackers line up 5 yards ahead of defenders at the halfway line. Coach plays a through ball to trigger the race. 3 attackers vs 3 defenders per rep.

Coaching Points

  • +Recovery angle is critical — run toward your own goal line, not directly at the ball carrier
  • +Get goalside before engaging — do not dive in from behind and risk a foul
  • +Communicate with the GK to coordinate who covers which attacker
  • +Once goalside, slow the attacker down and force them wide, away from the center of the goal

Progressions

  1. 1.Increase the head start to 8 yards to make recovery more challenging
  2. 2.Add a second wave of attackers who enter if the first attack is stopped within 5 seconds
  3. 3.Require defenders to win the ball and play it out to a target player on halfway
