Description

Two teams play 6v6 in a defined area with a 5-second counter-pressing rule. When a team loses possession, they have 5 seconds to win it back or the opposition earns a bonus point. This drill instills the gegenpressing habit of immediate ball recovery after losing possession, building collective pressing triggers and the stamina required to press aggressively throughout a match.

Setup

Full pitch or 60x40 yard area with two goals and GKs. Two teams of 6 wearing bibs. Coach keeps time on each pressing phase and calls out when 5 seconds have elapsed. Spare balls around the perimeter.

Coaching Points

  • +The closest player to the ball must press immediately — do not wait for teammates
  • +Surrounding players cut off the nearest passing options to trap the ball carrier
  • +Press as a unit — if one player presses, nearby teammates must support within 2-3 seconds
  • +After the 5-second window, drop into a compact defensive block if the ball is not recovered

Progressions

  1. 1.Reduce the counter-press window from 5 seconds to 3 seconds
  2. 2.Award double points for goals scored within 5 seconds of a counter-press recovery
  3. 3.Add a rule that the pressing team must commit at least 3 players to the press
