Description
The defensive line practices stepping up in unison to catch attackers offside, using verbal communication and peripheral vision to stay synchronized. A coach or midfielder plays through balls while the back line reads the moment to step and raise the line. This drill develops the timing, communication, and courage required to execute the offside trap without leaving gaps behind the defense.
Setup
Use one half of the pitch. Set up a back line of 4 defenders across the edge of the penalty area. A midfielder or coach plays through balls from 30 yards out. 2-3 attackers time runs to try to beat the offside trap. Defenders practice stepping up on the passer's cue. Use cones to mark the defensive line. 10 repetitions, then rotate a defender to the attacking group.
Coaching Points
- +Designate one player as the line leader who calls the step — everyone moves on their command
- +Step on the cue of the passer's body shape — when they drop their head to play the through ball, step up together
- +Hold the line momentarily after stepping to ensure the assistant referee sees the offside clearly
- +If one defender is late, the whole trap fails — constant communication and checking shoulder is essential
Progressions
- 1.Add a second passer who can switch play before the through ball to test the line's ability to readjust
- 2.Attackers vary their runs — some go straight, others check short then spin behind
- 3.Play live from the moment of the through ball — if the attacker is onside, they go to goal 1v1
