Description
Three attacking players work together through a rehearsed combination pattern that ends with a shot on goal. The drill links passing, movement off the ball, and finishing into a single fluid sequence, replicating how goals are scored through quick interplay in the final third. Players must execute under the pressure of knowing a goalkeeper is waiting, which sharpens their composure and shot selection.
Setup
Use one half of the pitch with a full-size goal and goalkeeper. Three attackers start at the halfway line. Player A starts with the ball centrally, Player B is to the left, Player C to the right. The trio combines through a pattern (e.g., A to B, B to C, C shoots, or A to C, C lays back to A who plays through to B). Coach calls which pattern to run. 5 repetitions per group before rotating.
Coaching Points
- +The final pass before the shot should be played across the defender to wrong-foot the goalkeeper
- +The shooter should have their head up to pick their spot before the ball arrives — do not look down
- +Supporting runners must stay onside but as high as possible to reduce the distance to goal
- +Vary the finish: side-foot placement, driven shot, or chip depending on goalkeeper position
Progressions
- 1.Add 1-2 defenders who start 5 yards behind the attackers and must recover
- 2.Allow free combination — no set pattern, players must read each other and decide
- 3.Limit to 5 seconds from first pass to shot to increase urgency
