Description
Players practice the classic give-and-go (wall pass) using a mannequin to represent a defender. The ball carrier passes to a teammate, sprints around the mannequin, and receives the return pass in the space behind. This drill develops the timing, weight of pass, and explosive first step needed to execute combination play that breaks defensive lines in matches.
Setup
Set up a 20x15 yard grid. Place a mannequin in the center. Player A starts with the ball 5 yards from the mannequin. Player B (wall player) positions at a 45-degree angle, 5 yards to the side. A passes to B, sprints around the mannequin, and receives the return. Rotate roles after each repetition.
Coaching Points
- +Play the initial pass firmly to the wall player's front foot so they can return it first time
- +Explode past the mannequin immediately after passing — do not admire your pass
- +The wall player should angle the return pass into the space ahead of the runner, not to their feet
- +Use the outside of the foot or a subtle body feint to sell the initial pass and freeze the defender
Progressions
- 1.Replace the mannequin with a passive defender who applies light pressure
- 2.Add a second mannequin to create a double wall pass sequence
- 3.Make the defender fully active — the combination must be quick enough to beat real pressure
