Description
Two players compete 1v1 for a ball tossed in by a server, simulating realistic aerial challenges that occur during matches. The emphasis is on body positioning, using arms legally to hold ground, timing the jump, and winning the first contact. This competitive drill builds physical confidence and the aggression needed to dominate in the air during set pieces and open play.
Setup
Mark out a 10x10 yard grid. Two players stand in the center facing the server who is 10 yards away. The server tosses the ball high between them. Players compete for the header. Award 1 point for winning the header and 2 points for heading to a target area. First to 10 points wins. Rotate pairs.
Coaching Points
- +Position your body between the opponent and the ball — get goal-side or ball-side first
- +Use your arms legally for balance and to hold your ground without pushing or elbowing
- +Time your jump to meet the ball at its highest point — explode upward off one or both feet
- +Once you win the header, direct it with purpose rather than just flicking it anywhere
Progressions
- 1.Server varies the toss height and trajectory so players must adjust positioning
- 2.Add a small goal behind each player — winner of the header must direct it toward the opponent's goal
- 3.Allow the second ball — after the initial header, a ground ball is played in for a 1v1 to goal
