Description

An attacker receives the ball with their back to goal from a server, must control it, turn sharply, and shoot as quickly as possible. A passive or semi-active defender applies pressure from behind, simulating real match conditions where strikers rarely receive the ball facing the goal. This drill sharpens the first touch, body orientation for turning, and the ability to get a shot off under pressure.

Setup

Set up 20 yards from goal. A server plays balls in from the edge of the center circle. The attacker starts on the penalty spot with a defender behind. On receiving, the attacker turns and shoots. Rotate after each attempt.

Coaching Points

  • +Check your shoulder before receiving to know where the defender and goal are
  • +Take a positive first touch across your body or to the side to create a shooting angle
  • +Get the shot off within two touches of the turn — speed of execution is critical
  • +Aim for the far corner when turning to the near post, and near post when turning far side

Progressions

  1. 1.Increase defender intensity from passive shadow to fully active
  2. 2.Vary the service — low to feet, bouncing, or into the air
  3. 3.Allow the attacker to choose between shooting and laying off to a supporting runner
