Description

This drill teaches the crucial concept of the third-man run, where player A passes to player B, who lays the ball off for player C making a penetrating run from deep. The pattern breaks defensive lines because the third runner is difficult to track and arrives at speed. Players rotate through all three roles to understand each responsibility in the combination.

Setup

Set up three cones in a staggered line 10 yards apart. Player A starts at the first cone with the ball, Player B at the second cone, and Player C at the third cone but offset 5 yards to the side. A passes to B, B lays off first time, C runs onto the layoff. All players rotate one position forward. Use multiple groups simultaneously.

Coaching Points

  • +Player A's initial pass must be firm and accurate to the feet of player B
  • +Player B's layoff should be weighted into the path of the third-man runner — play it forward, not square
  • +Player C must time the run to arrive as the layoff is played — too early and you are offside, too late and the moment is gone
  • +After playing the initial pass, player A should continue moving to create a decoy or secondary option

Progressions

  1. 1.Add a passive defender near Player B to force quicker layoffs and sharper movement
  2. 2.Finish the combination with a shot on goal — place a goal 15 yards beyond the final cone
  3. 3.Player C has a choice: continue solo or combine with A who has made a supporting run
