Description
A game played on a half pitch with one full-size goal defended by a GK and a counter-goal line at halfway that the defending team can score on by dribbling across. This creates an intense, directional game that replicates the final-third attack-vs-defence battle of a real match. The attacking team practices combination play, movement, and finishing, while the defenders work on shape, pressing, and transitioning to counter-attack.
Setup
Use a half pitch with a full-size goal and GK at one end. Mark the halfway line as the counter-goal line. Attacking team (5-7 players) tries to score on the goal. Defending team (5-7 players) wins possession and tries to dribble over the halfway line. Restart from the GK after every goal or counter-goal.
Coaching Points
- +Attacking team must be patient — circulate possession to find the opening, do not force it
- +Defenders stay compact and organised — do not get stretched by chasing the ball
- +When the defending team wins possession, transition quickly to the halfway line before attackers recover
- +Encourage shots from distance when central shooting lanes are open
Progressions
- 1.Attacking team must score within 30 seconds of receiving the ball or possession turns over
- 2.Add offside — defenders can play an offside line to compress space
- 3.Defending team scores a counter-goal by passing to a target player beyond halfway instead of dribbling
