Passing & Possession

15–25 min10–10 playersU10–U18Description
A 4v4 game with 2 neutral "floater" players who always join the team in possession, creating a constant 6v4 overload for the attacking team. Teaches players to find and use the extra player, and for defenders to cope with being outnumbered.
Setup
Mark a 35x25 yard field with mini goals on each end. Two teams of 4 in different bibs, plus 2 neutral floaters in a third color. Floaters always play for the team with the ball. Floaters cannot score directly. Play 5-minute games.
Coaching Points
- +Floaters: position yourself where you create a passing angle that does not already exist
- +Team in possession: use the numerical advantage — do not play through the middle when the wings are open
- +Team defending: stay compact, do not chase the ball, protect the center
- +Transition is key — when you win it, find the floaters immediately
Progressions
- 1.Floaters can score but only with one touch
- 2.Add a "must use both floaters" rule before scoring
- 3.Make floaters play on specific zones (one in each half) to encourage switching play
- 4.Reduce to 3v3+2 in a smaller grid for even faster transitions
