Description

Players practice explosive sprinting followed by controlled deceleration to a complete stop within a marked braking zone. This drill directly addresses the most common mechanism for hamstring and ACL injuries in youth football — uncontrolled deceleration. Players learn to lower their centre of gravity, shorten their stride, and absorb force through flexed knees.

Setup

Mark a 30-yard straight lane: first 20 yards is the sprint zone, last 10 yards is the braking zone (marked with different colour cones). Players start at one end, sprint at 90% effort, then decelerate to a complete stop within the braking zone. Walk back to start, 30-second rest between reps.

Coaching Points

  • +Accelerate with forward lean and powerful arm drive through the sprint zone
  • +Begin decelerating by sitting back slightly and shortening stride length
  • +Knees stay flexed and soft — never lock out the knees during deceleration
  • +Come to a controlled stop with weight balanced — ready to change direction

Progressions

  1. 1.Reduce the braking zone to 5 yards to demand sharper deceleration
  2. 2.Add a change-of-direction component — sprint, brake, then cut 90 degrees left or right
  3. 3.Coach calls direction during the sprint so players react while decelerating
