Description
Pairs of players move around a defined area and earn points by completing passes through small cone gates scattered across the grid. The drill combines technical passing accuracy with spatial awareness, as players must scan for open gates, move into position, and time their passes to thread through the narrow openings. It naturally develops vision and encourages constant movement because standing still means missed scoring opportunities.
Setup
Set up a 25x25 yard grid. Place 8-10 cone gates (2 cones, 2 yards apart) randomly inside the grid. Players work in pairs with one ball. Pairs earn 1 point for each successful pass through a gate where the partner controls on the other side. Cannot use the same gate twice in a row. 3-minute rounds, count total points.
Coaching Points
- +Scan the grid continuously for open gates — the best players always know where the next gate is before they receive
- +Weight the pass so your partner can collect it on the other side of the gate without breaking stride
- +Move immediately after passing to create an angle for the next gate — do not stand and watch
- +Use the inside of the foot for accuracy through the gates and keep the ball on the ground
Progressions
- 1.Add a defending pair who tries to intercept — now gates that are guarded must be avoided
- 2.Reduce gate width to 1 yard for greater accuracy demand
- 3.Add more pairs to increase congestion and require sharper awareness of traffic
