Description

Like musical chairs but with soccer balls. Players dribble around the grid while music plays (or the coach counts). When the music stops, players must dribble to and stop their ball on top of a cone. One fewer cone than players means one player is eliminated each round. This game develops dribbling under pressure, first touch control, and the ability to change direction quickly toward a target.

Setup

20x20 yard grid with cones scattered throughout (one fewer cone than players). All players have a ball and dribble freely. Coach plays music or counts aloud. Remove one cone each round. Last player standing wins.

Coaching Points

  • +Keep the ball close while dribbling so you can change direction instantly when the music stops
  • +Scan the area while dribbling — know where the nearest cone is at all times
  • +Use a firm sole-of-the-foot stop to control the ball on top of the cone cleanly
  • +Dribble in open space away from other players to give yourself more cone options

Progressions

  1. 1.Players must perform a skill move (step-over, drag-back) before they can claim a cone
  2. 2.Add a rule that players must use only their weak foot when dribbling to the cone
  3. 3.Make it a team game — partners work together and both must reach a cone to survive
