Description

A target player receives the ball with their back to goal while a defender applies pressure from behind, practices holding the ball up, shielding it, and laying it off cleanly to an oncoming supporting player. This drill develops the physical and technical skills strikers and attacking midfielders need to retain possession under pressure and bring teammates into play in the final third.

Setup

Set up in the attacking third with a 20x15 yard zone. A server plays the ball into the target player who has a defender behind them. A supporting player starts 10 yards behind and makes a run to receive the lay-off. Rotate roles every 4 repetitions.

Coaching Points

  • +Get your body between the ball and the defender before the pass arrives — feel the pressure and lean into it
  • +Take a strong first touch away from the defender to create space for the lay-off
  • +Use the arm legally to feel where the defender is — do not push, but know their position
  • +Communicate with the supporting runner — call "hold" or "set" so they time their run correctly

Progressions

  1. 1.Increase defender intensity from passive to fully competitive
  2. 2.Add a second supporting runner who makes an overlapping run after the lay-off
  3. 3.Allow the target player to turn and shoot if they create enough space
